I am so sick of answering this question.

The flag is moving because the astronauts are fiddling around with it, putting it in place. You'll notice that the flag only appears to be moving when one of them is standing near-by or holding it.

It's standing straight out because there's a solid piece running along the top to keep it like that. You can easily see it in the picture if you look closely enough.

The pictures were taken from the lunar space module, nasa doesn't send a vehicle or satellite or anything in space without it being covered in camera's. So no, there's no one standing out in 1/3-g vacuum holding a Polaroid.

To make the story short on the flag without having to type an entire energy physics paper is your seeing the release of stored energy. Drop a rubber ball on your floor...does it hit the floor and stop? No. Why?

The moon has about 3-6 inches off loose "dust" on it's surface..that's why you see the deep footprints left from astronauts. So, if the wind was blowing I think you would also have a very bad dust storm...I didn't see one.

Also in pictures of the flag your just seeing a crumpled flag. It's not easy ironing flags in 1/3-g vacuum.

Actually, you are exactly right. They knew the flag wouldn't fly with no atmosphere on the Moon, so they sewed a wire into the top edge of all the flags placed on the Moon so that they would appear to fly. They look a little like they're rippling, but that's just the aftereffect of being stored in a small space. In the videos taken on the Moon's surface you can see that the flags only move when an astronaut is touching them.

There were two astronauts on the surface in all six Moon landings, so one astronaut posed with the flag while the second astronaut took the pictures, in this case (Apollo17) geologist Dr, Harrison Schmitt. If you look closely, you can see his reflection in Gene Cernan's visor.

The six Apollo Moon landings are among the best documented events in human history: thousands of pictures, hours of video, nearly half a ton of Moon rocks, and millions of eye witnesses, including myself. There is not a single scientist in the world who doubts that they took place. To deny them is to discredit the magnificent achievement of the team which went to the Moon, and to reveal abysmal scientific ignorance.

The proofs of the Moon landings have been documented in detail on web sites like these:

I have heard the myth that we never did land on the moon the mythbusters on discovery channel tested it but I do not know if it is real or not. But think about it this way you are moving the flag the pole goes forward and the flag follows that makes it point in opposite direction of witch you are pulling it and he just set it on the ground and then he took the picture.

OK now that I have read the other answers I notice the rod.

The flag is not blowing. There is no air therefore no wind on the moon. The footsteps of the astronauts are still in the exact same place they were when they stepped there. the flag is wired to stay open. The "man" in the moon is just the arrangment of craters and valleys that make it look from earth like there's a face there.

Yes, Americans have landed on the moon. I think that a wire was indeed used to hold up the flag. Actually, more than on person were on the moon. (One of which was in the picture. The other took the picture). Americans even drove a moon car all over the moon to study it.

I lived and was a teenager during this time and yes it happened. He was first on the moon but...it does appear to be blowing so sorry can't answer that one.

One small step for man...a giant leap for mankind. I heard that said in real time and was watching TV. Can remember it vividly... so don't you ever doubt it was true and we Americans were the first to land on the moon and walk on it.

this is not a good point. it is nonsense.

the flag is not blowing. it is held up by a wire support, and was swinging like a pendulum when the astronuts deployed it. this is well-known to all but moon hoax cranks.

the picture in question, if you bothered to read the caption, is gene cernan, and was taken during apollo 17.

project apollo was one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century, if not of all time. shame on you!

it is real.

the flag is not blowing, if u look closer at the top of the flag, it is held up by a stick.

what would be the point of faking it anyway?

the camera was attached to the leg of the space ship, and there was another man with him anyway.

hope i helped!

It's the wire the used to support the flag. Instead of it resting (low gravity), it kinda bobs up and down. this makes the cloth look like it's flapping , but the wire is wiggling.

There is a rod that goes out from the top of the poll to make it look like the flag is flying.

You can see it if you look at the top of the flag in the pic.

but there was a man that visited the moon, and put our flag on the moon..

yes that was real.

omg the flag isn't blowing obviously
anonymous
2008-11-21 23:07:19 UTC
Yeah there is a bar going across the top to keep it up.

obviously they would put one in there... otherwise it would just hang there and you couldn't see it. they aren't idiots.

the flag is blowing because of the rocket.

you know, like when helicopters cause it to be windy?

yeah.

anyways, i do believe there is a man on the moon, if not many.

we can only see what they chose to show us.
OMFG!! STFU!!

its solar wind

and its not the man on the moon its the man in the moon becuase the craters on the moons surface look like a guys face.

i don't think anyone really knows except the "man on the moon" himself, but i personally think that it was staged.
