Well, the tests show that it is expanding, and according to the big bang theory, there is no reason why the ends should be contracting. Contrary to popular belief, this is how the universe will meet its demise. There will be no contracting, the universe will keep expanding at a slowly accelerating speed, until every terrestrial object is so far apart, meaning all thermal energy is so spread out, that the universe will meet absolute zero, and all molecular life will cease.

The way that I look at it, it is very much broken down and nearly dead; it's just taking a long time to get there.

I say this for one specific reason: at the time of the Big Bang, the universe existed at a temperature of 300 nontillion degrees. At that moment, the four forces were one. Now the overall temperature of the universe is only 2.785 Kelvin; that is, 2.785 degrees above Absolute Zero. The four forces are well-separated and unsymmetrical. If that isn't broken down and almost dead, I don't know what is.

Current status of the universe is that its expanding at an ever accelerating rate, 13.2 Billion years have passed since its birth, and its quite young, and its already grown to at least 47 billion light years away from us. things are pretty nominal at the moment :)
