Question:
Quite a few questions about the new Apollo 18 mission controversy trend?

I'll just dive into this:

1. in the movie, it said that the film had been uploaded to "www.lunartruth.com" but did not say by who. Did this legitimately happen and does anyone know who uploaded it? Is the idea that it was leaked?

2. Ok, the movie seemed really realistic, but there was a cast and crew! I mean.... really?

3. Would hollywood be allowed to make a movie like that without permission of the family members of these people? If these people were actors, why would the families allow this? I mean, (spoiler alert) for those of you who have seen this, you know that in the end Nate goes crazy as an effect of his infection. Why would his family allow him to be portrayed as an insane zombie-like host of parasitic spider things trying to open the shuttle through the window with a hammer?

At the end of the movie, I wanted to cry. I really don't want answers like "apollo 17 was the last mission," because i have been doing research and i am aware. i just want some explanation of the movie itself and how it could be allowed to be created. also, IF ANYONE CAN FIND PICTURES OF THE ACTUAL MEN PORTRAYED IN THE MOVIE, BEFORE ANYTHING HAPPENED TO THEM, that would be fantastic.

Thanks

1. Apollo 18 is a Movie. It is not a documentary despite the style and marketing which would have you believe otherwise. There is a thing called "viral marketing". It is a process by which an advertising company plants fake information in websites, blogs, and other places online in hopes that people will find them by chance. The hopes are that people will see something online that rings a bell from an ad they have seen and will seek out the movie. The very purpose of viral marketing is to make you unsure as to what information is real and what is just part of the movie plot.

2. See point 1. If the movie did not seem realistic, the illusion is broken and reactions like yours can't happen. The producers of Apollo 18 fully expect you to believe it is a true story and to tell everyone you know how scary and crazy it was. The fact that you are on here means "mission accomplished".

3. Hollywood can make such a movie because these are fictional characters. They don't need anyone's permission to film a story populated with made-up characters in made-up situations. If you look carefully at the end credits, I am sure you will find a disclaimer that "any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental."

The more I read your post, the more I am conflicted myself. I believe you may very well be a part of the marketing team trying to drum up interest in the movie. I can't imagine you would be fooled by it.

The fact that your question and answer history is "private" only makes me more suspicious that you are a marketing plant.

First to all those ppl who just commented trying to sound so self assured and harsh to you, how rude and ignorant you all are. Okay here goes. The government hides things from the public and that we all know agreed. Second I realize yes its a movie with credits. Some of the footage is credible and come on would they really use someones real name who actually done the mission? Just type in ur questions online you"ll see. That lunar site is down coincedence.... hardly! If its all nonsense why do we have radio transmitters and telescopes and other projects secretly funded by the government. Rocket launching .... well me and my family are all based in florida n not any of us for ages has heard, payed attention or clammed up to the tv when a rocket or wateva was bein launched. Why haven't we been back to the moon for almost 40 yrs" bull crap that "the moon isn't interesting" I beg to differ nasa or scientists exicedtly post new things about the moon as much as they can. Finally isn't it more credible to believe that the footage was about little creatures instead of the usually portrayed extraterrestrials? nothing was said about a virus ppl... the guy was tryin to figure out y his partner had a wound ... no symptoms decscribed a virus. Start being more open minded nay sayers! Don't u realize now there's more media out there about hostile aliens now?.......... I'm just saying!

It is being portrayed as a movie of fiction to detract from the reality that this actually happened. What better way to make something seem fake then to create a movie about it that has many holes in the logic? Its a brilliant cover up over our first encounter with extra terrestrial life forms.

Its a shame most people will dismiss this as being just a movie when in fact this really happened. There is a reason we never went back to the moon. There was a lot of pressure mounting on the government about why we never went back and they brilliantly decided to fund a movie that seems absurd to draw attention away from the fact it really did happen like this.

The universe is a very scary place and alien life forms are not going to be happy when we arrive. Sadly, our government does not think we can handle this information so they obscure it by making a mockery of the events in movies and the press thereby discrediting the events.

No, it didn't seem really realistic. In reality, NASA couldn't have launched a Saturn V in secret. Such a launch... well, to put it mildly it tends to be VERY visible, and the security perimeter around Cape Canaveral is nowhere near sufficient to isolate such a launch.

The Saturn V which was originally tasked for Apollo 18 ended up being used for the launch of Skylab.

I'm sorry you don't want to hear the truth about this matter. I'm not sure why folks are so credulous, or seem to WANT to believe that this movie is based upon a true story. To be honest, it's a little sad that you have such a hard time distinguishing reality from fiction. Maybe it's a product of raising a generation on so-called reality TV? I don't know.

Edit: Why would a fictional story involving fictional characters NOT be allowed to be created? The REAL astronauts slated to fly on Apollo 18 were Richard F. Gordon (Commander), Vance D. Brand (Command Module Pilot) and Harrison Schmitt (Lunar Module Pilot). None of them were featured as characters in the movie. Schmitt ended up flying on Apollo 17 instead, Brand flew on the Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous and three STS (space shuttle) missions. Gordon flew on Gemini 11 and flew the Command Module for Apollo 12.

Here are the original crew assignments for the three cancelled missions. There was no "Nate" or Nathanial in those crew assignments>

"...Crew assignmentsDeke Slayton was the Director of Flight Crew Operations and effectively chose the crews for the flights. He did not intend to give astronauts two lunar landing commands but, according to historian Michael Cassutt, as late as the summer of 1969—when 10 landings were still scheduled—Slayton planned to give Lunar Module Pilots Fred Haise, Edgar Mitchell, and James Irwin the opportunity to walk again on the Moon as Commanders.[9] During the early Apollo missions he used a rotation system of assigning a crew as backup and then, three missions later, as the prime crew; however, by the later Apollo flights, this system was used less frequently as astronauts left the program. Slayton wanted to give rookies a chance, and astronauts did not want to take backup positions that no longer could lead to prime-crew spots.

A Gantt chart showing how astronaut assignments were deeply affected by canceled Apollo missions. In the case of Apollo 18 the crew was probably the Apollo 15 backup crew:[2]

Richard F. Gordon, Jr. (Commander (CDR))

Vance D. Brand (Command Module Pilot (CMP))

Harrison Schmitt (Lunar Module Pilot (LMP))

When Apollo 18 was canceled, Schmitt was moved up to Apollo 17 under pressure from the scientific community, replacing Joe Engle. Schmitt, a geologist, became the only professional scientist and the twelfth man to walk on the Moon.

Slayton's intention for the Apollo 19 crew was the original (prior to cancellation) Apollo 16 backup crew:[2][10]

Fred Haise (CDR)

William R. Pogue (CMP)

Gerald P. Carr (LMP)

For Apollo 20 there is even more uncertainty. Based on normal crew rotation, the crew would likely have been:[2]

Stuart Roosa (CDR) (replacing Pete Conrad, already CDR on Apollo 12)

Paul J. Weitz (CMP)

Jack R. Lousma (LMP)

Another possibility was:[3]

Stuart Roosa or Edgar Mitchell (CDR)

Jack R. Lousma (CMP)

Don L. Lind (LMP)..."

If you really want pictures, do your own online research. I suspect all you really want to do is to TRY pick an online fight with people. That tactic doesn't work any more.

The movie was allowed to be created because it is fiction. Why should the families object? The men portrayed in the movie are fictional characters and nothing happened to them. It's all made up.

I believe it is possible. Nasa just recently told us there is water on the moon and mars! Water is h2o the "o" means oxygen and where there is oxygen there is life! Theyre not going to tell us straight up if there is extraterrestrials or not, everyone would panic, thqt is why theyre releasing this information slowly and try to make people think its fake, its part of reverse phsycology. Also china has offered the u.s to fly to the moon again, and they would pay all expenses to go again, and we declined them. Why? I dont know but there is something there that we havent gone back.

No, it is completely fictional. But it is Cinema Veritas, or "Real Film" and that means every effort has been made to make it seem real life. And they did a brilliant job, didn't they? Lunartruth.com is one of the best marketing ploys I have seen in years.

This movie is FICTION. Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission. There was no "Apollo 18." You need to learn the difference between fiction and reality!

Saw it today. It's not real. It wasn't scary, there was no apollo 18 because of budget issues. It's just hollywood trying their best to make another paranormal activity or Blair Witch.

Yes, I sometimes notice that when a questions gets starred it increased the chance of other people starring it. Occasionally I'm influenced to star questions because they already have stars. Sometimes I star a question and people follow me. Speaking of starring, here's one for you. I noticed six people have already starred the question, so I think I will follow them!

The movie is designed to make you think it's actual live footage. Think Blair Witch Project.

The whole idea that a bacteria or virus could live on the moon is hilarious! Even viruses need water.

It's. Not. Real. The actors and actresses make it seem real to make it scarier... Plus if it WAS real national security would be pissed <.<
