If humans landed on the moon long ago. Why wouldn't technological advances allow humans to get there quicker and with ease. Are humans regressing in the space race. They're talking about Mars and they cant even get to moon and back. Its 2013 already!

I wonder what is your great hurry about !

There is no point in going to Moon, spending, trillions of $. The outcome (of going there) should justify the spending of tax-payers money. There is nothing we need to learn afresh about the Moon, that we need to go there.

Even the Apollo missions could have been performed by Robots. But JFK made a pledge to his nation that he would put a 'Man on Moon'. His words needed to be redeemed; and as part of 'Space Race'.

It is not that they "can't even" (you needn't challenge or provoke anyone with these words as the doers of such things know far better, instead of being goaded, needing no provocation from non-scientists). It is always easier to tell the other fellow to put his hand in the fire to pull out nuts. If you are in such a great hurry why don't you do it yourself & go to Moon? Enough technology is available in the public domain, enough money is floating around & there are private operators who promise to take you there.

"...to get there quicker and with ease" - is by SaturnV Rocket, that Neil Armstrong & a dozen others did. It is not possible to get there in a private aeroplane, in shirt sleeves & pants.

You know, whether I multiply 2 with 2 on a slide ruler or on an iPhone, I still get 4. The technological progress we've had does not contribute significantly to going to the Moon.

When the lunar landings ended, there were no other buyers for the Saturn V, the Apollo command module or the lunar lander so the production lines were shut down, the equipment and people disbursed. We basically lost the expertise and technology to go to the Moon and any further trips would start from scratch again except with the knowledge that it can be done and a good idea of what works.

As to why no one has gone to the Moon, people want a return on their investment so what would the return on the investment be in going to the Moon?

What technological advances? Rocketry is pretty much the same now as it was then. It is still massively expensive just to lift mass into low Earth orbit, not to mention out of Earth's gravity well, so we need to have pretty good reasons to do so. Just because computers are faster and cost less doesn't mean that translates to space travel.

.

The last time it was done was for political motivations during the Cold War, motivations that no longer interest the U.S. China will likely land on the Moon in about a decade for propaganda purposes, so you'll have to wait until then.

.

Meanwhile, we know far less about oceans here on Earth than we do about the Moon, and oceanographic knowledge will pay direct dividends to the future welfare of humankind. Wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate on learning about our own planet, than to make all that effort to return to what we are certain is a dead, barren world?

Budget cuts. A lot of people got uninterested in the moon since we'd already been there a few times, so they quit funding it. A trip to mars might be talked about because we haven't been there yet; and that's what the people want. They want something new. The moon is old news to everyone now, really. It's very unfortunate though. I would love to see another trip to the moon.

We have made some progress in rocketry since the 60's and 70's, but not to the point where we can go to the moon "with ease". It still costs billions of dollars just to send a few astronauts who will do nothing more than collect a few rocks and pose for the camera. It's not worth the cost, in other words.

It's a very expensive endeavor. We could get there again if we wanted to. I think China is planning on visiting the moon in the future. It's a big barren rock. We have an international space station. We aren't going to get too far without a new form of propulsion. Our current methods are limited by the chemistry of rocket fuels.

Going to Moon was about prestige... Being the first ones to do it... Now since "we" did it, there is no other reason to go there again, since it is extremely expensive and no profit.

Because Apollo 18 ended in tragedy.

Due to over budget and too costly.

I saw a movie... and there were bugs... and Nazis... and Apollo 18 with dead guys. Scary.

Well they don't have anymore funds because Obama closed down NASA:.(
