Nothing is going to happen. The main theory is that because the sun will be perfectly eclipse the center of our galaxy blocking some sort of essential something keeping the planet in balance. But the thing is that we don't get any essential anything from the center of our galaxy except maybe our speed somehow related to the gravity of the milky way's super massive black hole. Another theory is that because the sun will be reaching a solar maxima it will send off a solar flare large enough to get through our magnetosphere and destroy our ozone layer and kill all life on earth. But, however the sun reached a solar maxima in 1998 and society went on normally then. Also people think a flare could get through due to the fact that our magnetic field is weakening and switching polarity's but our field is weakening at such a slow rate that it would take much more than 2 years for our magnetic field to weaken that much. Also, people think that yellowstone will go off on 12/21/12 but the odds of that happening then are the same as if yellowstone were to go off in 10 seconds. But yellowstone would cause a nuclear winter and most likely wipe all life from earth. More proof is that the mayan calender is about 200 years off due to the fact that they don't have a leap year. Also, there are millions of mayans in mexico today that still use the mayan calendar and they don't see 2012 as the end of the world but the beginning of a new cycle similar to our century system. Yes, I know the mayans disappeared but their are still some people in mexico who claim to be descendant of mayans and use the mayan calendar

Since all the prophecies about global disaster in 2012 are lies and a little superstition, the world will survive 2012 with ease. There is one bright spot about it all, questions about 2012 will cease except for a few plaintive ones asking why it didn't happen. It won't happen for the same reason the Earth was not damaged or destroyed by planet X in 2003. Because it's only psychopaths, drug users, ratbags and frauds predicting it, mostly for profits, not prophecy.

Yikes, I'd grab my pets and head for the moon. But I'd have to catch a flight somewhere, somehow. Hopefully, by then there'll be commercial spaceflight tickets that are affordable. Otherwise, only the rich will be able to get off of this planet alive.

Other alternatives are to convince the Russian RSC Corporation to let you aboard their massive spacecrafts--the Energia, the Buran I and Buran II. Each of them is capable of hauling 5,300,000 lbs/payload. Negotiations with them broke down a few years ago when they asked for $1 million/lb. It's probably cheaper to acquire them somehow if you can find a venture capitalist or angel investor to buy them outright; another alternative is to broker a deal between the Russians and the AUASS, headed by the United Arab Emirates.

China probably would've churned out cheap space shuttles if it weren't for the fact that....

"A federal judge found former Boeing Co. engineer Dongfan "Greg" Chung guilty of six counts of economic espionage and other charges for hoarding 300,000 pages of sensitive documents in his home, including information about the U.S. space shuttle and a booster rocket."

we are like babies, if your parents say that is good is good until you find out later on was a mistake, but at that time it was right. same thing with 2012, we believe what we want to, because the future no ones know it yet, just the present and of course the past.

Those who actually THINK have no concerns about 2012. Those who accept whatever idea is pitched to them without thinking are in a panic.

2012 MYTH 1

Maya Predicted End of the World in 2012

The Maya calendar doesn't end in 2012, as some have said, and the ancients never viewed that year as the time of the end of the world, archaeologists say.

But December 21, 2012, (give or take a day) was nonetheless momentous to the Maya.

"It's the time when the largest grand cycle in the Mayan calendar—1,872,000 days or 5,125.37 years—overturns and a new cycle begins," said Anthony Aveni, a Maya expert and archaeoastronomer at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.

The Maya kept time on a scale few other cultures have considered.

During the empire's heyday, the Maya invented the Long Count—a lengthy circular calendar that "transplanted the roots of Maya culture all the way back to creation itself," Aveni said.

During the 2012 winter solstice, time runs out on the current era of the Long Count calendar, which began at what the Maya saw as the dawn of the last creation period: August 11, 3114 B.C. The Maya wrote that date, which preceded their civilization by thousands of years, as Day Zero, or 13.0.0.0.0.

In December 2012 the lengthy era ends and the complicated, cyclical calendar will roll over again to Day Zero, beginning another enormous cycle.

"The idea is that time gets renewed, that the world gets renewed all over again—often after a period of stress—the same way we renew time on New Year's Day or even on Monday morning," said Aveni, author of The End of Time: The Maya Mystery of 2012.

2012 MYTH 2

Breakaway Continents Will Destroy Civilization

In some 2012 doomsday prophecies, the Earth becomes a deathtrap as it undergoes a "pole shift."

The planet's crust and mantle will suddenly shift, spinning around Earth's liquid-iron outer core like an orange's peel spinning around its fleshy fruit. (See what Einstein had to say about pole shifts.)

2012, the movie, envisions a Maya-predicted pole shift, triggered by an extreme gravitational pull on the planet—courtesy of a rare "galactic alignment"—and by massive solar radiation destabilizing the inner Earth by heating it.

Breakaway oceans and continents dump cities into the sea, thrust palm trees to the poles, and spawn earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and other disasters. (Interactive: pole shift theories illustrated.)

Scientists dismiss such drastic scenarios, but some researchers have speculated that a subtler shift could occur—for example, if the distribution of mass on or inside the planet changed radically, due to, say, the melting of ice caps.

Princeton University geologist Adam Maloof has extensively studied pole shifts, and tackles this 2012 myth in 2012: Countdown to Armageddon, a National Geographic Channel documentary airing Sunday, November 8. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News and part-owns the National Geographic Channel.)

Maloof says magnetic evidence in rocks confirm that continents have undergone such drastic rearrangement, but the process took millions of years—slow enough that humanity wouldn't have felt the motion (quick guide to plate tectonics).

2012 MYTH 3

Galactic Alignment Spells Doom

Some sky-watchers believe 2012 will close with a "galactic alignment," which will occur for the first time in 26,000 years (for example, see the Web site Alignment 2012).

In this scenario, the path of the sun in the sky would appear to cross through what, from Earth, looks to be the midpoint of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which in good viewing conditions appears as a cloudy stripe across the night sky.

Some fear that the lineup will somehow expose Earth to powerful unknown galactic forces that will hasten its doom—perhaps through a "pole shift" (see above) or the stirring of the supermassive black hole at our galaxy's heart.

Others see the purported event in a positive light, as heralding the dawn of a new era in human consciousness.

NASA's Morrison has a different view.

"There is no 'galactic alignment' in 2012," he said, "or at least nothing out of the ordinary."

He explained that a type of "alignment" occurs during every winter solstice, when the sun, as seen from Earth, appears in the sky near what looks to be the midpoint of the Milky Way.

Horoscope writers may be excited by alignments, Morrison said. But "the reality is that alignments are of no interest to science. They mean nothing," he said. They create no changes in gravitational pull, solar radiation, planetary orbits, or anything else that would impact life on Earth.

The speculation over alignments isn't surprising, though, he said.

"Ordinary astronomical phenomena are imbued with a sense of threat by people who already think the world is going to end."

Regarding galactic alignments, University of Texas Maya expert David Stuart writes on his blog that "no ancient Maya text or artwork makes reference to anything of the kind."

Even so, the end date of the current Long Count cycle—winter solstice 2012—may be evidence

It's just a year like any other. We don't know when the world is going to end...and we shouldn't. Simply because we will all freak out like we are doing now.

I thought the ending to the movie, 2012, was lame. If that were to really happen, we would grab some magnets and head for the Moon or Mars. We would have to build farms, restaurants, bakeries, etc. That's because water vapor and CO2 are the 2 primary byproducts of aerobic respiration and combustion. Add methane gas to this, and you now have 3 potent greenhouse gases to build a rich and thick atmosphere.

Remember, Earth's MAGNETIC FIELD deflects COSMIC rays, while our ATMOSPHERE blocks out uv, gamma and x-rays. The geodynamo in the core of the Earth generates its magnetic field. The outer core consists of molten iron/nickel/cobalt, and the inner core is solid iron due to the immense pressures at the very center of the Earth. Radioactive Cobalt 60 or thorium is also thought to be present. A magnetic field also protects any water from being photodissociated by solar uv, a process which strips hydrogen from water molecules, while the solar wind blows it off into space. Mars once had flowing rivers, but lost most, if not all of its water and atmosphere due to photodissociation.

Ideally, a series of 3 magnetic fields should be in place in order to live on the moon or on Mars, and to protect its waters--mobile, local and global magnetic fields:

On Earth, the magnetic field on the SURFACE is only 0.5 to 2.0 gauss, while near the CORE, it's approximately 100,000 gauss, or 10 Tesla. That's because magnetic flux varies as the Inverse CUBE of the distance, R. Use a fluxgate magnetometer to measure the magnetic field.

A Samarium Cobalt magnet of at least 1 Tesla (10,000 gauss), imbedded 5' under a compressed dome will create "local" magnetic fields, protecting about 50 inhabitants from cosmic rays.

Elongated Bar Magnets (200-300 gauss) strapped onto spacesuits will create a cosmic umbrella of "mobile" magnetic fields, deflecting cosmic rays while you walk and work. Eventually, a global magnetic field will be necessary in order to walk out of the dome and begin building an atmosphere.

To create a "global" magnetic field on Mars, a Superconducting Magnetic Ring would have to be imbedded deep into the crust, about 200' deep. You'll need to have a Superconducting Magnet that meets these specifications: variable ramping up from 2 to 14 Tesla; quench recovery; ability to sustain a "persistent current" indefinitely; backup and failure protection; 24/7 monitoring system.

Super Pulsed Fiber Lasers such as the Photonic's IPG laser will make lunar and Martian excavation projects a breeze compared to conventional drilling equipment: rocks will glow red hot and crumble. Then it's just a matter of scooping out the ashes and continue lasering.

Iron oxide on Mars can be reduced with Hydrogen to yield free metal and, water, as a byproduct.

We'd have to build an atmosphere from scratch, which isn't as difficult as you may think. Believe it or not, we'll need a lot of bakeries, restaurants, farms and food markets; we'll also need to be active because the more active we are, the more water vapor and CO2 we add to a planet's atmosphere, 24/7. Pretty soon it'll be flooding on Mars! That is, the more we COOK with hydrocarbon gases such as butane and propane, the more we EAT, and the more ACTIVE we are, the faster the atmospheric gases build up. Farm/animal droppings add NITROGEN from nitrogenous wastes, while compost piles, landfills and sewers add METHANE gas. Methane is 25x more potent at heating an atmosphere than CO2.

In order to build up a substantial atmosphere quickly, we'll need lots of people cooking, baking, grilling, barbecuing, simmering soup, etc. That's because WATER VAPOR and CO2 are the 2 primary byproducts of AEROBIC RESPIRATION and COMBUSTION. Add methane gas and you now have 3 potent greenhouse gases which will build a rich and thick atmosphere over time, while balancing temperature extremes. Cooking creates CONVECTION when hot air rises and cold air falls. Build a Fischer Tropsch reactor to make fuels such as Propane.

Combustion:

Propane C3H8 + 5 O2 --> 3 CO2 + 4 H2O

Aerobic Respiration:

C6H12O6 + oxygen --> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP (energy)

Eating foods containing the enzyme Catalase, will convert the hydrogen peroxide in our bodies to harmless WATER and OXYGEN. So by eating potatoes--mashed, boiled or baked--we'll keep our blood oxygenated and our bodies hydrated. Green apples, spinach, liver, turnips, rutabagas, etc. also contain Catalase.

Mushrooms are known to protect against the effects of radiation.

METHANE gas will impart a BLUE color in the sky (based on studies of Uranus' and Neptune's atmospheres). Light reflected from Neptune’s deep atmosphere is blue, because the atmospheric methane absorbs red and orange light but scatters blue light. Compost piles, landfills, sewers and farm/animal droppings are natural sources of methane.

Martian CRATERS have to be filled with water, iron sulfate, seaweeds and phytoplankton. Thru photosynthesis, dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is released which is converted to sulfate aerosols in the atmosphere, generating cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). CCNs cling to water vapor and dust particles to create OXYGEN and clouds. Ashes from burnt newspapers or coal ashes can serve as dust. Cooking and boiling water creates convection when hot air rises and cool air falls, forcing dust particles up to create clouds. Through photosynthesis, phytoplankton (especially coccolithophorids) are responsible for much of the OXYGEN present in the Earth's atmosphere – 50% of the total amount produced by all plant life.
