I have never seen anything like this on google maps before. It is at the corner of Groom Road, and Old Mill Street. If you use the Satellite view you can see a patch of what looks like cleared dirt surrounding the colonel. Is this real?

That's quite cool -- the benevolent image of Colonel Sanders looking into space.

I found this region on Google Earth. Here are some details:

coordinates:

latitude 37.6460 N

longitude 115.7508 W

If you enable the "geographic web" box in Google Earth, you find that this is also the location of the "Little A'le'Inn". Google Earth has a picture of the inn, and it has signs like the following:

- Welcome UFO's and Crews

- Earthlings Welcome

So it's just a weird roadside spot in the middle of nowhere near the Extraterrestrial Highway, which runs by Area 51.

Presumably the proprietor figured that after traveling all those light years, the aliens would have a hankering for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

If you zoom out from the Colonel, you find the town of Rachel, NV, about half a mile to the east. There (and also to the south along the Extraterrestrial Highway) you'll find a lot more alien-related photographs on Google Earth.

On Google Maps, a street view is available along the Extraterrestrial Highway, but unfortunately not from the streets of Rachel.

Here's a link to the Colonel Sanders image on Google Maps:

The welcome sign to the town reads as follows:

Welcome to Rachel Nev

Humans 98 Aliens ?

The Little A'le'Inn appears to be the primary (or maybe the only) business for many miles around. Here's its web site:

Here's information on the Colonel Sanders image (the face from space):

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20061114005428&newsLang=en

It doesn't have anything to do with the Little A'le'Inn, but was an advertising gimmick by KFC. It was constructed from painted tiles in 2006.

There are a total of nine aircraft visible at the Groom Lake facility. Going south to north there are two 737s, one has stairs by the front passenger door; a Beech 99 turboprop; four F-16s, and a pair of UH-60 helicopters. On the F-16s you can clearly see the wingtip weapons stations for air to air missiles. Two of the F-16s appear to have some kind of a store (a fuel tank perhaps) on the right wing outer pylon. The T-38 do not have the wingtip missile rails .
