Question:
What created the universe? Can things pop into existance?

A friend of mine says one little dense atom started everything....dreams and your imagination comes from your consciousness, nothing more..and it has to be in the lines of god or your just making things upl...our ideas are based on the world we will in, anything madmade, we got the idea somewhere on this planet or the universe. Things don't just pop into our head everything we think of is based on knowledge we already know, our conscious just puts it together for you even if you don't realize it, you cant just know something with out seeing it or every hearing anything to do with it.

As far as I know everything starting from a dense atom is just a theory. At the same time an atom is a micro universe on its own which doesn't conclude where consciousness comes from or even what created that one atom. And I don't know about you but I've had dreams way out of this world, and even ideas that are plenty out there that are beyond what surrounds us at the moment. How do you explain the fact that consciousness which isn't tangible ends up materializing out of thin air. (take a flower seed for example, you put it in water and it grows.. now how would you explain where the whole thing grows out of and how does it even know how to arrange it self to become a flower)

What do you think?

You can't compare totally dis-similar things ad then draw a conclusion. :

consciousness is NOT tangible.

A seed is a mini plant that grows. Well understood in biology.

And oddly, things DO pop into our heads (thoughts)

Are you speaking of Brahman, Isis, Thor or Jupiter when you speak of god. ?\

Science does not presume to know where the universe came from.

Science acknowledges that the universe exists and attempts to explain what we see.

The idea of an atom came from Georges LemaƮtre - The Primeval Atom - in 1927

These days that term has been dropped in favor of The Big Bang Theory.

Things actually can just "pop" into existence, the phenomenon that causes this are called quantum fluctuations. However, contrary to popular belief, they cannot explain the origin of the universe. The universe already needs to exist for a quantum fluctuation to occur. The truth is that the big bang tells the story of the moments after the singularity started to expand (by the way, the singularity is sometimes called the "primeval atom, but it's just a knickname, it wasn't an atom). We don't know the origin of the singularity, nor do we know why it expanded. Give it time though, 200 years ago we didn't even have electricity, it may take some time to crack the biggest mystery in science. I wish I had a better answer for you, but "we don't know" is the honest answer.

That being said, let me address your comment of "just a theory". Theory and law are about as good as it gets. Theories explain a phenomenon, make predictions, have stood up to testing, and are backed by factual evidence. Laws are proven observations that occur anytime certain conditions are met. The difference between them are WHAT and WHY.

A law states WHAT something is doing. Example: Kepler's Laws Of Planetary Motion state WHAT the planets are doing. Whereas a theory would explin WHY, the theory of gravity explains WHY the planets move the way they do. Theories and laws are not interchangable because they have very different definitions of what constitutes them, but once something is considered theory or law, it is accepted in the scientific community until it is falsified. Something cannot be "just a theory" because theory is the best rank to achieve. There is nothing higher, so saying it JUST a theory is an error.

Lastly (lots of questions in there, good for you), is consciousness. The human brain is a very very very complicated bio-computer. It even runs on electricty (seriously). The synapses between neurons in the brain operate in a similar way to a computer. It is completely feasible that one day we may be able to make computers so advanced, they are self aware and "conscious".

Some people believe in the theory of evolution whereas others believe God created the universe. Personally I believe God created the Universe, and I have evidence. If 2 cars hit each other it will cause mess and things will be damaged, there will be no trace of life like you won't suddenly see animals plants growing lol. That's the same with theory of evolution. The cars represent the atoms hitting each other. Another evidence is for everything which is created there must be a creator. Even a lace for a shoe needs ti be made so how can such complicated life forms be created without a creator there must be a really powerful creator which is God.

Oh and about that flower thing I believe God controls/commands everything for e.g. The planets are commanded to orbit the moon or whatever there orbit lol (not good in science) it's like you never see the moon coming out in the morning and the sun rising at night because God controls it. That's the same with the plant.

Hope I helped :P phew gotta go asleep now

THIS Universe started with the Big Bang. The Big bang is NOT "just a theory." A Scientific theory IS NOT JUIST SOME delusional FANTASY made up by a mad scientist. That scientist was a CATHOLOC priest who became a Monsignor - Georges Lemaitre.

"...Words have precise meanings in science. For example, 'theory', 'law', and 'hypothesis' don't all mean the same thing. Outside of science, you might say something is 'just a theory', meaning it's supposition that may or may not be true. In science, a theory is an explanation that generally is accepted to be true. Here's a closer look at these important, commonly misused terms. ..."

YES, things CAN just pop INTO AND OUT OF existence. I explain consciousness as the product of physical act of two primates copulating to have children to continue the species. When does YOUR autobiographical memory begin? I REMEMBER turning three years old, and I have memories that go back to when I was less than SIX MONTHS OLD. That was MORE than 59 years ago. How long have YOU been conscious? Flowers know how to become flowers because of seeds and pollen and atoms bonding with each other into molecules and cells of DNA and chlorophyll and hemoglobin. The basic laws of physics and the Universe are very simple. IF you paid attention in arithmetic and math classes, you SHOUILD be able to understand the rules of HOW the Universe works.

The big bang was not an atom. It wasn't anything but energy in the beginning. No gods have ever been shown to exist, much less whichever god you're talking about. In science, nothing is 'just a theory'. A theory is as good as it gets in science. Theories are BETTER than facts - theories contain facts, and laws, and observations, and evidence. They tell you not only what will happen by why. The speed of light is a fact, and Einstein's theory of special relativity tells you why and how. The big bang is very well supported by evidence. Yes, things pop in and out of existence in our universe all the time. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it's not measurable and observable with the right equipment.

I think both are true. God created the earth and day and nights and all the creatures of the earth and the last thing he did was create man and then decided he should have a woman then rested on the seventh day. So if we can open our mind and think about that along with the big bang and evolution and try not to take the Bible so literally Cuz the Bible also says that in heaven or God's time a day can be like a thousand years here and a day here can be like a thousand years in heaven so I think God created it and also gave us so called scientific proof that it all happened by itself because he gives us the power of free will and that means free will to believe in him or some scientific theory

The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model that describes the early development of the Universe. According to the Big Bang theory the Universe was once in an extremely hot and dense state which expanded rapidly. This rapid expansion caused the Universe to cool and resulted in its present continuously expanding state. According to the most recent measurements and observations, the Big Bang occurred approximately 13.75 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the Universe. After its initial expansion from a singularity, the Universe cooled sufficiently to allow energy to be converted into various subatomic particles, including protons, neutrons, and electrons. While protons and neutrons combined to form the first atomic nuclei only a few minutes after the Big Bang, it would take thousands of years for electrons to combine with them and create electrically neutral atoms. The first element produced was hydrogen, along with traces of helium and lithium. Giant clouds of these primordial elements would coalesce through gravity to form stars and galaxies, and the heavier elements would be synthesized either within stars or during supernovae.

I think both you and your friend do not know much about cosmology or astrophysics. And yes "virtual" particles "pop" into existence all the time.

Flowers, like you have DNA.

I think it all boils down to belief in God or not. Science, in my opinion, is centered around figuring out what's here, etc.

God made the world and no things cannot pop into existence..
