There are lots of good answers, but for me the best aspect of NASA is they attempt to answer, scientifically, the most fundamental questions: How did the universe start? How will it end? Are we alone?



NASA itself is a government organization, filled with problems. Of course NASA could be streamlined and made more efficient. But NASA has sent men to the moon, robots to every planet (including on one the way to Pluto, which will always be a planet damnit!) and people to live in space for years at a time. For the pennies on the dollar that NASA gets, they are feeding our imagination, asking new questions as they answer old, all while NASA engineers invent stuff that feeds our economy and changes our lives.



That's what NASA does. We need NASA.

NASA is large so has its share of problems. But besides helping the world understand our neighbourhood in space, it does a tremendous job of helping schools learn science. Their outreach and partnership programs are models for all educators.



Their unmanned and manned space program excel in new discovery. We are better able to understand Earth by studying other planets. If we learn how to colonise the Moon or Mars, then we'll have a choice when the next asteroid hits, or if Earth is headed toward disaster with rapid climate change, or other catastrophe.



But before that happens, their environmental efforts help us better understand and manage our planet, and thier technology transfer has improved and saved life.



We are the first species on Earth to have a chance to change our destiny. The are providing opportunity for survival.

Officially it is supposed to give us aerospace technology, and has done a good job of that. Every aircraft flying has loads of technology developed by NASA. Airbus has complained that Boeing has an unfair advantage because of all the NASA research they had access to. And of course there are all the communication, weather, gps and other satellites, and the rockets that launch them.



But the thing that really makes congress keep funding NASA is employment. It has become a big government jobs program.

Military Aircraft such as:



F-8 Crusader, Several F-8Cs were used by NASA in the early 1970s to test such features as Digital Fly-By-Wire Control System and supercritical wings, which have become standard on modern high performance military aircraft.
