The modern cruise missile can be traced back to WW II Nazi Germany who developed the V-1 flying bomb or a form of guided missile that were launched to destroy English targets and some in occupied France. German scientists also developed the

V-2 rocket and others that were developed to attack enemy aircraft. The V-2 developed by Werner von Braun was the basis for our modern intercontinental missiles and the space program...also developed by von Braun after he immigrated to the US when the war ended.

The first forms of rockets and missiles were developed by the Chinese many centuries earlier.

in 1916, Lawrence Sperry patented and built an "aerial torpedo", a small biplane carrying a TNT charge, a Sperry autopilot and a barometric altitude control. Inspired by these experiments, the US Army developed a similar flying bomb called the Kettering Bug
