The current year. The distance from Hubble to the Earth's surface is measured in light seconds, and only a couple if that.

Stars are located hundreds and even thousands of light-years from Earth (the light-year is a measure of distance). So the light from these stars took hundreds and even thousands of years to get here.

When such a star is photographed by Hubble (or seen through a telescope), we see it as it was when the light left the star -- hundreds, even thousands of years back.

The distance between the Hubble Space Telescope and Earth is roughly 600 km. The light from Earth's surface takes roughly 0.002 seconds ( = 1/500 s) to reach Hubble.

So, if you were to program the telescope to take a picture at exactly 2:30 pm (= 14:30) on October 5, 2010, and you were on Earth's surface, holding up a very large and very accurate atomic clock display, the picture would show:

"October 5, 2010, 14:29:59.998"

instead of

"October 5, 2010, 14:30:00.000"

The Hubble does not take pictures of Earth. But let's assume it was on the moon's surface and not orbiting the Earth.

Then the picture it took would be about 1.3 seconds in the past. Timed by a person standing on the Earth. It talks light 1.3 seconds to travel from the Earth to the moon.

The Hubble telescope takes pictures of space, not the Earth. If it were to take pictures of Earth, they would be of the present day.

It doesn't use a special kind of light to take pictures of stars. It's just that the light from them has taken thousands of years to reach us, as they are very far away. The Earth is obviously close by.

This question doesn't make sense.

The hubble doesn't take pictures of the earth. It takes pictures of space. But if it does, it will take like 1 second for the image of the earth to reach the computers. The year will be the year that hubble took the picture on.

This is like asking what year it is on the Space Shuttle when it services the HST. Do you believe it time travels, moving into the past or the future to get there? No, you're just a troll, right?

first off. it dosent take pictures of earth. with that said. its the same year on earth. the only difrence is we get it like 2 seconds later because we have to w8 fro the signal to get back to us. Thats like saying when we get phone calls what year is it on earth. the signal has to go to a satellite and back to the phone. it happens almost instantly
