Swigert replaced Ken Mattingly.

The crew of Apollo 13 were exposed to German Measles by another astronaut. Lovell and Haise had already had German Measles and were therefore immune, but Mattingly had not. He was therefore replaced at the last moment by Swigert.

Charlie Duke got the measles from his young daughter, and exposed virtually everyone in the astronaut corps to the disease. Ken Mattingly had never had the measles, and he was due to fly on Apollo 13 in a few days. The flight surgeons realised that if Mattingly did have the disease he would be getting really sick at just the wrong time, when he was alone in the Command Module in lunar orbit, waiting for the other two to come back and rendezvous with him before the return home. Unwilling to take that chance, the surgeons grounded Mattingly and Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, was given the choice two days before the launch of either taing Swigert, who was on the backup crew, or else letting the entire backup crew fly Apollo 13 and having his crew bumped to a later flight.

He chose to take Swigert and go to the Moon, and he said many times since that he never once regretted that decision.

Ironically, Ken Mattingly flew on Apollo 16, having never developed the measles, with Charlie Duke, who had exposed him to the disease in the first place.

My old boss, Adm Thomas K. Mattingly (SPAWAR PD40). We used to kid around that he must have been abducted by aliens while was alone on Apollo 16, because the man was plain nuts -- even by admiral standards.

Very smart fellow. Very poorly portrayed in the film "Apollo 13," imho (Gary Sinese was not a great casting choice). Although the line where he thinks they should go back into the simulator and do it all over again was spot-on.

Interestingly enough, Mattingly never DID get the measles...

Mr. Swigert was later elected to Colorado's State Senate, but died of cancer before he could take office...

Bummer.

He replace Ken Mattingly who was exposed to the measles which he never had and so never developed an immunity to it like the rest of the crew. They couldn't take the chance of him getting it during the mission.
