Satellites can be classified by their function since they are launched into space to do a specific job. The type of satellite that is launched to monitor cloud patterns for a weather station will be different than a satellite launched to send television signals across Canada. The satellite must be designed specifically to fulfill its role.

Below are the names of nine different types and Uses of satellites :

Astronomy satellites - Hubble Space Telescope

Atmospheric Studies satellites - Polar

Communications satellites - Anik E

Navigation satellites - Navstar

Reconaissance satellites - Kennan, Big Bird, Lacrosse

Remote Sensing satellites - Radarsat

Search and Rescue satellites - Cospas-Sarsat

Space Exploration satellites - Galileo

Weather satellites - Meteosat

Iridium satellites are in low orbit and provide satellite telephone service anywhere in the world. GPS satellites are in low orbit and provide the signals that make GPS navigation systems work. The international Space Station is the only manned satellite. It is mostly to help us improve our technology for living and working in space, and also for other scientific experiments that cannot be done on Earth and cannot be done by automated machines in space. The Hubble Space telescope is a satellite in a slightly higher orbit that takes pictures of distant objects without the blurring effects of the atmosphere that interfere with pictures taken by telescopes on the ground. Galaxy 25, Nimiq 1, EchoStar 7, EchoStar 9/G 23, and Anik F3 are five of the many commercial direct to home TV satellites in a high geostationary orbit that relay the TV programs you see if you subscribe to one of the satellite TV services. GOES weather satellites in a high geostationary orbit provide the cloud pictures and other weather data you see sometimes on the TV weather report. DSP satellites are military satellites in high geostationary orbit that use an infrared sensor to oprovide early warning of missile launches anywhere in the world.

I cant think of ten uses but here are few that I know off

1) Predicting weather

2) get satellite images which can be used by the govt. or people

to manage their properties or by architectures

3) Predict hurricanes, cyclones and other natural disasters

4) Astronomy( get pictures of other galaxies )

5) Transmission of TV programmes, phone calls, internet

6) satellite phones can be used in remote areas

thats all I can think of right now

Vanguard--early test satellite, first to make TV images of Earth from space TIROS--early weather satellite, tracked clouds, storms, weather fronts. Echo--large (100 foot diameter) balloon like satellite used in early communications experiments Intelsat--series of communications satellites at 23,000 mile altitude IUE--scientific satellite that examined ultraviolet radiation from objects in space Molniya--Soviet era communications satellites

My top 10 picks are as follows:

10) Weather Prediction

9) Global Positioning (GPS)

8) Phone Communications

7) TV / Entertainment broadcasts

6) Internet / Data transmissions

5) Detection of Gamma Ray Bursts

4) Astronomy (Hubble, Compton, WMAP, etc.)

3) Defense - early warning of nuclear detonation and impending attacks also ground troop movements and other intelligence gathering

2) Earth management sciences - Detailed earth mapping (e.g. Google earth), Crop Management, Erosion Management, etc.

...

1) Track the where-abouts of George Bush and **** Cheney to make sure they DON'T make it back into the white house ;)
