MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia is leading the race to complete a manned mission to Mars and could land a Russian on the Red Planet by 2025, a leading scientist was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"We have something of a head start in this race as we have the most experience in piloted space flight," the director of the prestigious Space Research Institute, Lev Zelyony, told Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

The goal of becoming the first country to land a human on Mars is "technically and economically achievable" by 2025, he said.

Mars is the most prestigious prize for the Russian space industry if it wants to boost the country's "scientific and political prestige" through manned space flight, he said.

"We lost the race to the moon," Zelyony said.

The United States achieved that goal on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon.

The last manned US mission to the moon was the December 1972 f

I think it is true that Russia has more experience with manned space exploration in a lot of ways, and they definitely got better results in terms of money - they achieved comparable achievements on about 10% of the budget as NASA, i believe.

Experience isn't everything though - you need a ton of money and a ton of skilled people to do something as monumental as a manned Mars mission. Russia's broke, and it's skilled space engineers must either be too old (too experienced?) or have left the country by now.

Personally i love the idea of exploring space but i think we should leave it to the robots for now. The money saved could be put towards keeping OUR planet suitable for human life.

This is really quite silly. There is no race. Any manned mission to mars will be an international effort. I have no idea why any such announcement would come out of Russia like this. It's kind of dumb

It's just possible. Any of the super-powers or economic giants would crave for power and prestige in the exploration and conquest of outer-space, regardless of the risks or money involved. Pride and a little historical baggage often play a part in the actions and destiny of a nation. Main contenders for this race are likely to be Russia, US, China, Japan, UK, Germany, France.

Russia or (extra precise, u.s.) is the 1st one to deliver a satellite tv for pc encircling the earth. u.s. better it,s area application and despatched the 1st guy (Neil Armstrong) to the moon. There,s an area race so, we are able to in basic terms have confidence Russia in the event that they actually attain sending guy to Mars. nicely, there,s starvation because of the fact some international locations are overpopulated and their nutrition standards or production at the instant are not sufficient. some international locations are economically undesirable so, their nutrition desires at the instant are not sufficient. some international locations are at conflict or have drought or different calamities so their nutrition production is lacking. inhabitants and the small area of a rustic isn't truthfully the main important concern on the subject of nutrition .look at Taiwan and Singapore as an occasion. those international places earn lots because of the fact of their exports. subsequently they are able to import the ingredients they nevertheless choose. So, they don't have starvation concern because of the fact the certainly everyone seems to be commonly disciplined, basic, technically knowledgeable and industrious.

Who cares, the U.S has more than enough on its plate. We don't need to worry about sinking billions of dollars just to put a man on a stupid dusty lifeless planet.
