You can't get a good telescope for $50. Instead, why don't you pay for a subscription to "Sky & Telescope" or "Astronomy" magazine? Or pay his first year's dues for the local astronomy club? Or buy him some astronomy books? Here's a link below to Sky & Telescope's web site where they sell all kinds of neat astronomical maps, books, etc.

Telescopes are precision instruments like cameras and computers, and you simply can't get a decent one for 50 bucks. In that price range you will be better off with a good 7x50 or 10x50 binocular. Better still, get them a good book like NightWatch by Terence Dickinson which will acquaint them with astronomy and help them in choosing a telescope.

I consider minuteblue: you're a lot more effective off identifying to purchase a pair of precise-end binoculars. He has presented the more effective answer, yet i will upload some problems with my personal... Binoculars will assist you to to comb the sky/land quick and the picture will be acceptable area up. A telescope will in basic terms assist you to take advantage of one eye and also you'll desire to regulate it as a way to view yet another merchandise (my newbie's telescope become $one hundred and adjusting that is a soreness!). also, the picture will be became round using mirrors of the telescope. Telescopes are not valueless-- i might want to point them in case you've been more effective interested in viewing deep-area gadgets, yet binocs will be greater than any telescope you are able to purchase for $20-50 and could are available in obtainable for terrestrial viewing, besides. (in case you DO opt for to get a telescope, stay remote from objective/Kmart/Walmart telescopes and some thing over 100x magnification!)

Ok, let me tell you - I have many years experience here, and I have many telescopes, up to a 12 inch sct. And I also have this: http://www.amazon.com/Celestron-21061-AstroMaster-Refractor-Telescope/dp/B000MLHMAS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354995427&sr=8-1&keywords=telescopes+for+astronomy $ 75 bucks ! For nearly 3 inch refractor !
I can vouch for this one - it is superb for the meager price. Even at twice that - which it often sells at !
IF you are that short of cash - only this scope is worth buying - $ 38 bucks: http://www.amazon.com/Celestron-21024-FirstScope-Telescope/dp/B001UQ6E4Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1354995427&sr=8-6&keywords=telescopes+for+astronomy
I'd lobby HARD to get that first one - but the cheaper scope is still very good for beginners, and is cheap !

Well, ..., you're not going to find a decent scope for $50. However, you can find a decent pare of binoculars - Bushnell Powerview porro prisim 10x50 Binoculars go for $60 at Wal*Mart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bushnell-Powerview-10x50-Black-Porro-Prism-Binoculars-in-Clam/19215450) and the will beat any scope you can buy for $50. They'll be perfect for observing the stars and the moon you'll even be able to see 4 of Jupiter's moons with them as well as many of the brig ht nebula such as the Orion Nebula. So start with binoculars and when save up about ~$310 you'll be ready to by a decent telescope.
